Final Draft

                                                                                        Final Draft
A filthy, crowded, disease infested world can surely be more populated and bring people together, in other words; a slum. A slum is a dirty, overcrowded district inhabited by the poor. Slums can have negative and positive effects on people such as people dying from poor sanitation and diseases, it provides employment, housing, and public services for those in need, and since the people all face the same challenges they all have a strange sense of community.
A negative effect on slums is that people die from poor sanitation and diseases. In source 2, Fink says, “And a muddy swamp of plastic bags obstructs the entrance to the latrine…”flying toilets” – flimsy bags filled with human waste.” This means they have no toilets and they use anything they can as far as waste disposal. If they just throw their waste like that they are releasing chemicals that are harmful to everyone. Even though there is a negative amount of diseases, there is a positive effect within the slums.
A positive effect on slums is that it provides employment, housing, and public services. In source 1 it says, “Today, many large cities are ringed by urban slums and shanty towns within view, and in contrast to, high rise apartment buildings, commercial skyscrapers, and dramatic architecture.” This means that slums are rapidly growing around large cities because it offers most of the people’s needs at a cheaper price. People are getting more and more attracted to slums because of the cheaper and more affordable costs on their needs. Besides talking about statistics and economy, the actual people have a positive effect too.
The last effect on slums is that it has a bigger sense of community.  In source 3 it says it is a “public-private partnership.” This means that all of the residents of slums hold some kind of bond that holds them together like a family. The people all share the same problems so they help each other out to survive. All of there have been positive and negative effects that build up what ends up becoming a slum.
